he Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) started as a cottage Hospital in 1917 and has since evolved into a fully-fledged 2nd referral facility in the country with a 800-bed capacity. Teaching and referral facility was accorded by the legal notice No.78 of 12th June 1998 under the state corporations Act (CAP 446) and the first board of the management was gazetted on June 1999.

Immediately after the inception, the hospital board prepared a three-year business plan. Largely a management driven exercise this plan was the first document upon which the board based its actions. The plan articulated the vision and mission of the hospital and set out the organizational structure. It remains to date the only authentic document guiding major policies on financial management and control , recruitment and hospital capitalization.

In the meantime, there have been many challenges posed by rapid developments in the hospital and among its stakeholders; these have necessitated the development of the strategic plan for 2008-2012. The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital incorporates the Academic Model for providing access to healthcare.THE RILEY MOTHER AND BABY HOSPITAL,

The completed Mother and Baby Hospital is an ultra-modern 160-bed facility with the state-of-the-art equipment dedicated to mothers and their newborn. It contains a New Born Unit, ICU, delivery suits, Mother Hostels and tutorial rooms.
THE RENAL UNIT WATER TREATMENT PLANT,
The renal unit has water treatment plant with a capacity of serving ten hemodialysis machines. The Principle operation of the water plant is to filter and purify raw water through a Reverse Osmosis.

The Hospital has acquired two self-diagnostic dialysis machines.

ISO 90012008 CERTIFICATION,
The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), recognizing the importance of its customers and other stakeholders undertook to achieve ISO 9001:2008 standard, which is a Quality Management System (QMS). In the year 2006, the Hospital Board signed a contract with the Ministry of Medical Services to ensure that this standard is attained by the Hospital. This led to the hospital’s certification on healthcare Delivery Training and Research early last year.

UPGRADING COURSES AT MTRH TRAINING CENTRE.

Centre upgrades nurses from certificate to diploma level through regular classes, distance and e- learning. Recently, the commission of higher education accredited the centre to offer the Kenya registered nursing diplomas. The training centre is equipped with a library and computer lab and offers VCT and health related short courses.

INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH AND ETHICS COMMITTEE (IREC)

IREC serves as the regulatory entity for research at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and the Moi University; College of Health Sciences.  It is accredited to the National Council of Science and Technology and registered with the United States Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP). 

It is committed to entrenching a rich ethical research culture within the institutions. Its role is to review, evaluate and decide on the scientific and ethical merits of all research proposals to the institutions. It ensures and guarantees the rights, dignity, safety and protection of the subjects.

CENTRE FOR ASSAULT RECOVERY OF ELDORET (CAR-E)

The Hospital in conjunction with a number of institutions has established a centre for sexual assault survivors, the ‘Centre for Assault Recovery of Eldoret’ (CAR-E), which caters for survivors of all ages and races. The Centre ensures that survivors are treated with dignity and get Post-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV/AIDS within 72 hours of the attack. It is located at the Accident and Emergency Department where treatment, including admission and filling of P3 forms is done free of charge.
THE OXYGEN GENERATING PLANT

The Plant generates oxygen used in the Hospital. Currently, a piping system is being installed in phases- a process that will see the wards access piped oxygen. This makes the Hospital among the few institutions to own such a plant.

SUPPLIES WAREHOUSE

The hospital has constructed a magnificent warehouse that will be utilized by both the Hospital and the AMPATH programme.

 

IVPU
The intravenous production unit (IVPU) is now producing IV fluids that are sufficiently serving the wards. The unit is manufacturing more than five solutions through reverse osmosis namely; Dextrose 5%, Sodium Chloride, Dextrose 10%, Ringer Lactate (Hartman’s solution), Surgical and Methylated Spirits.

KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS
The Hospital successfully carried out two Kidney Transplants on 24th and 25th March 2009, this being the third mission to take place at the Hospital. Since the inception of the exercise, six patients; two females and four males received successful kidney transplants and are responding positively to post operative management.
AMPATH REFERENCE LABORATORY
The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH )  has a fully equipped clinical research Laboratory capable of performing various biochemistry, immunology, hematology and molecular tests to meet the ever-growing number of clients.
MDR TB ISOLATION WARD
The four-bed capacity unit presently houses one XDR-TB patient- the only XDR-TB case in the country.
INCINERATOR
The hospital has one of the largest incinerator in western Kenya. It is a dual powered that can attain a maximum of 120 degrees Celsius. It burns upto 120 kgs of waters per hour.
MTRH WATER TREATMENT PLANT
The water treatment plant, which will draw water from the Hospital borehole, is an innovation to ensure that water for consumption is safe and clean. The Director said that there are plans to bottle the commodity for use at the Hospital cafeteria, during meetings, seminars and workshops. The Hospital is currently supplied with water by Eldoret Water and Sewerage Company (ELDOWAS) and with its water treatment plant in place, its water bills would be reduced by 50%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


HIGH POWER GENERATOR
MTRH  now has an alternative power generator capable of generating 200 KVA of electric power. The 200 KVA engine has a three-phase system capable of generating  power within nine seconds in an event of an abrupt electricity supply disconnection or failure. The  Hospital has other Power Generators serving all its sections.  There is one in Memorial Wing capable of generating 100 KVA, another at Majaliwa Theatre of 40 KVA, one for the Main Building of 330 KVA, one for High Trunk with the capacity of generating 5 KVA, and 2 for AMPATH Programme capable for releasing 330 KVA combined.

AMPATH/ MTRH HAART FARMS

AMPATH (Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare,)-a partnership between Indiana University School of Medicine, Moi University School of Medicine, and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital has launched a Family Preservation Initiative(FPI) which  brings patients to economic security through Agricultural extension services, Business Development Services including ;Micro Credit  facilities, and Imani Workshops , a Handicrafts workshop which employs over 100 HIV-positive  patients.
The initiative focuses on sustainability initiatives on agriculture-related businesses, since agriculture is a core competency of AMPATH patients, a competitive advantage in Kenya and over 75% of AMPATH patients/clients are experienced farmers with access to land. The initial project is a greenhouse, which grows passion fruit seedlings and a passion fruit juicing operation that will include cold storage and a water treatment facility. In the near future AMPATH envisages includes a beekeeping operation for honey production.
