AFTER THE FIRST ISO SURVEILLANCE AUDIT, KEBS GIVES MTRH A THUMPS UP

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) carried out its first surveillance audit on 7th to 9th October 2009, to gauge service delivery at Moi Teaching and a Referral Hospital following the award of ISO 9001:2008 certificate in Quality Management System on March 2009.

Surveillance Audits are periodic audits performed by an external auditor to ensure that an organization still meets ISO requirements. Surveillance audits generally occur every six months. They take 2-4 days in duration depending on the organization’s size.

The KEBS auditors looked for objective evidence that the quality management system is being maintained at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in its entirety, improved and corrected as needed. The outcome of the surveillance audit determined if the Hospital would continue to hold certification and act as a vehicle for improvement.

The auditors were impressed with the MTRH quality management system and reiterated that our certification status shall be retained in the records of certified institutions. Areas for improvement were pointed out since one of the principles of a quality management system is continual improvement.

The Quality Management Representative (QMR) Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa who was present during the closing meeting congratulated the Hospital staff for ensuring the QMS is sustained. He further informed all the auditors the Hospital would address the observations identified by adequately ensuring that the corrective actions are effective to prevent future recurrence.

Also present during the closing meeting was the Acting Chief Nurse Mrs. Jane Nyariki, Assistant Deputy Director Finance & Administration Ms Lily Koros and Finance Manager Mr. Mathews Birgen. The external auditors were Purity Wangui, the lead auditor, Samuel Ong’idi-auditor, Isaac Mureithi- auditor, Roselyn Makau-auditor and George Ooko who is a trainee auditor.
