ELDORET SOUTH MP VISITS MOI TEACHING AND REFERRAL HOSPITAL
[Tuesday, 09 March, 2010, 15:10]

International Women's Day has been observed since the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. In those years, great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America in 1913, the International Woman's Day  continued to be marked all over the world every March 8th.

The day would bring different personalities to join hands in celebrating the role women play in society. In one such gesture here at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Eldoret South legislator Mrs. Peris Simam visited mothers and their newborns at the hospital’s Riley Mother and Baby Hospital.
She hinted upon arriving at the labor ward that her purpose was to share moments with mothers during the International Women’s Day. The MP who was accompanied by civic leaders from the larger Uasin Gishu District said her gesture was to reassure mothers of the special place they occupy in society.

Mrs.Simam saluted Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for the role it is playing being the only Public Hospital in the country to be awarded ISO 9001:2008 Certification. While touring the labour, Ante Natal and Post Natal wards, the MP with a battery of reporters in toe, also donated assorted gifts to mothers and their newborns.

In a meeting with the Hospital Director, Prof. Haroun Mengech, the legislator paid tribute to the Hospital’s partners whose gesture through collaboration is evidenced by the far reaching and all important projects dotting the hospital today. It is also in record that more than a dozen international institutions of higher learning have been touring MTRH to benchmark on our projects and collaborations.

The MP also voiced her reservations on abortion saying there is no justification of terminating life unless it is recommended for medical purposes only. Mrs. Simam said the government is yet to pitch in towards the Hospital’s development programmes, for it to continue offering quality healthcare services.  She saluted MTRH and Moi University School of Medicine for their mutual collaboration that has been modelled as one of its kind in the world.

Present during the visit were, ADDCS Dr. Wilson Aruasa, Chief Nurse Mrs. Jane Nyariki, Asst. Principal Administrator Ms. Linah Boit and labor ward nurses.
