As early as 1970s' training of health care personnel were being carried out in the hospital. Eldoret District Hospital School of Nursing was operational with the hospital acting as its base. The college was offering certificate courses in Enrolled Community Nursing and Biomedical Engineering.
With the growing demand for health care personnel in the country, there was an urgent need to expand the facilities to accommodate teaching programmes and also the increased patient population.

The opening of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Moi University was a landmark event that would later have a direct impact on the development of the hospital leading to elevation of the hospital from a provincial to a national teaching and referral hospital with its functions being to provide training, educational facilities and participate in national health planning. The College is also a World Health Organization (W.H.O.) collaborating centre for problem based or problem solving approaches to education and practice in health. The College of Health Sciences uses Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital as its base for research and teaching. Its training are based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) Self-directed Learning and Community Based Education and Service (COBES). Its students are trained to recognize the importance of community involvement in its own health as well as the inter-sectoral collaboration in health care and health development.
