The Laboratory department at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital has commissioned the hematology and blood gas analyzers.

The haematology analyzer, type: ADVIA 120, tests blood samples for full haemogram and CFS cytology counts for diagnosis of patients.

The machine has two modes that include manual closed system as well as closed auto samples system. Results from the machine are availed for printing and can also be studied online.

The blood gas machine, a small digital analyzer also referred to as Rapid Point 500, tests blood gases for the management of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Speaking during the commissioning, the Hospital Director, Dr. John Kibosia said the equipment is part of the upgrading of the Hospital’s infrastructure.

“With the machines, patient management will now be easier and effective. Other than serving our diverse clientele, the Hospital’s Laboratories can now test samples from adjacent Hospitals as an income generating activity,” he said.

The occasion was attended by Deputy Director Clinical Services (DDCS) Dr. Omar Aly, Deputy Chief Nurse, Mrs. Jane Nyariki, and members of staff from biomedical, ICU, Laboratory and General Engineering.

The development follows the acquisition of automated Elecsys 2010 machine for carrying out specialized laboratory tests, and Bactec 9050 series, a digital blood culture machine.
