MTRH: READY FOR ADVANCED SPORTS MEDICINE CENTRE
The coming up of an Advanced Sports Medicine Centre at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) will open up new vistas in the medical tourism in the country. This was revealed by the Hospital’s Director, Dr. John Kibosia when he hosted the visiting international Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Surgeon, Dr. George John for a dinner party held at Eldoret Club on April 11, 2012.
He urged all the stakeholders in medical field in the region, local universities, private organizations, government institutions and well wishers to enter into a form of public and private partnership to make such a dream a reality. ‘The cost of operating and managing sports injuries within will be reduced significantly’, he opined.
The President of MEDIHEAL Group of companies, Dr. Swarup R. Mishra urged the local and international sportsmen and other stakeholders to have confidence in their local institutions. “I am confident that if we gear our minds and energies to this noble dream of making our city, Eldoret a hub of medical innovations like sports medicine and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) which we do in my facility, and combining it with the serene environment, coupled with the many sites of tourists attractions surrounding us, we will be able to create a centre of attention for clients from far and wide”, he asserted.
He lauded the pioneer role played by MTRH’s CEO in bringing in Dr. John to Eldoret to start the Centre to cater for a specialized healthcare and to mentor the local doctors.
The meeting was also informed about the Hospital’s first female Orthopaedic doctor to-be in Kenya, Dr. Neema Mbaruk who has been with the group, teaming up with Dr. John in his local operations.
The visiting surgeon performed one of the first arthroscopic surgeries ever done in the country on April 10, 2012 at MTRH. In total, eight cases were successfully done.
Dr. John, who is also Chairman of G.J Samani Group, thanked MTRH under the leadership of Dr. Kibosia, Dr. Mishra, Mr. Daniel Olela of SURGIPHARM and the local team he has been working with in the last one week for the collaboration and their warm support. He also commented the local media for fair and wide coverage they have given the whole exercise.
The dinner was co-sponsored by the MTRH and MEDIHEAL Group of companies and was also attended by local and international athletes based in Eldoret, clinicians and senior officials from both the two hospitals.
The smith&nephew in collaboration with SURGIPHARM supported the medical camp.
